The muskellunge — or muskie — is the apex predator of Minnesota's inland waters. Called 'the fish of 10,000 casts,' muskies are rare, enormous, and notoriously difficult to catch, making them the ultimate trophy fish.
Muskies inhabit large, clear lakes with abundant forage and structure. They patrol weed edges, rock bars, points, and open water. They need large home ranges and are typically found in lakes over 500 acres with diverse habitat.
Best months: June, September, October, November
Season opens: First Saturday in June
The season opens later than other gamefish to protect spawning fish. Fall is prime time for trophy muskies as they feed aggressively before winter. Figure-8 boatside turns are essential technique.
